The Worst Thing About Facebook Comes To Google: Birthday Reminders

tctv birthdayI was thinking about covering the launch of Google Birthday reminders, (which actually debuted Tuesday, sorry), but I decided instead to just post some pictures of what Google looks like these days. You may remember that the homepage was?taken over with a giant Nexus 7 ad?earlier this week,?and now Google is getting all Facebook-like with these "birthday reminders." Because really, my favorite thing about Facebook is how we've all been conditioned to leave messages like "hoping you're having a great birthday!"?on each others' Timelines.?Definitely?the best part of social networking, right?

Adele sends sarcastic tweet slamming wedding rumours

Adele sends sarcastic tweet slamming wedding rumours

Earlier this week an American publication alleged that Adele had tied the knot with boyfriend Simon Konecki.

The notoriously private singer had been reportedly spotted with a gold band on her wedding ring finger in July which apparently sparked the marriage rumours.

But it would seem that the reports are false as Adele has taken to Twitter to slam wedding rumours, writing: ?I?m not married...Zzzzzzz?.

The sarcastic star has made no secret of the fact that she would like to keep her privacy, but the six-time Grammy award winner has struggled to keep her personal life out of the press since becoming one of the most popular female singers in the world.

The latest rumours have forced Adele to make a rare comment about her private life on Twitter, in the hope that this will stop speculation about her relationship with divorcee Simon Konecki.

American publication Life & Style printed the photos of her with the suspected wedding ring and quoted a secret source which said: "Adele and Simon managed to keep the baby news a secret for so long that there are rumours they?ve already gotten married, too.

"She?s an old-fashioned girl and can?t wait to be part of a family unit. She just wants to focus on the baby and the man she loves."

Adele - whose baby is due in a month - managed to hide her pregnancy news for roughly six months, before making the shock announcement that she would be a mum soon.

In June she told her fans: "I?ve got some news... I?m delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together.

"I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we?re over the moon."

So it?s safe to say that Adele isn?t married, but even if she does tie the knot don?t expect her wedding photos to be published in a magazine any time soon!

Assad calm amid claims of bread-line slaughter

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad makes a rare public appearance by giving an interview to a pro-government news channel in Syria. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News, and wire reports

Calm. Defiant. Confident. That?s how embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad appeared in a lengthy interview on Wednesday evening on the pro-government news channel, Al Donnya.

The interview had the feel of a casual conversation rather than the hard-hitting questioning of a leader who is unleashing the might of his military on his country.

Even as Assad spoke, rights groups were documenting new outrages they say have been perpetrated on civilians.

U.S.-based?Human Rights Watch on Thursday said Syrian?jets and artillery have struck at least 10 bakeries in Aleppo in the last three weeks, killing dozens of people as they waited in line to buy bread.

"The attacks are at least recklessly indiscriminate and the pattern and number of attacks suggest that government forces have been targeting civilians," the group said, calling them "war crimes" -- although no claim by either side in this civil war can easily be verified.

Rebels said they shot down a Syrian fighter jet in the northwestern province of Idlib near the Turkish border, Reuters reported.?

Goran Tomasevic / Reuters

After months of protests and violent crackdowns, a look back at the violence that has overtaken the country.

The Syrian Martyrs Brigade claimed in a statement the plane was brought down near the town of al-Thayabiya. Video footage on al-Arabiya television showed what appeared to be smoke in the sky and a person parachuting down. An army helicopter hovered over the area, apparently in search of the pilot.?

There were no major announcements in Assad's interview; perhaps the boldest declaration he made was that he was still in the capital, Damascus, speaking to the Syrian people from the presidential palace.

This undoubtedly was to quash rumors that he had fled the capital in recent weeks as the fighting there intensified and rebels brazenly killed senior members of his regime.

Flames of Syria's conflict singe rest of region

And yet despite high-level assassinations, ?territorial gains made by rebels, increasing international isolation, sanctions and condemnation of his regime, Assad seemed optimistic.

"We are fighting a regional and global war, so time is needed to win it," he said. "I can summarize and say that we are moving forward. The situation on the ground is better, but there is no conclusion and this requires some time."

Time may not be on the president's side. Seventeen months after street protests morphed into a full-scale rebellion against his rule, his use of superior military power has done little stop calls for his removal from power.

This is how Assad described the conflict: "This issue is a battle of wills in the first place. They have the will to destroy the country; they started in Deraa, then moved to Homs, then Damascus, then Halab, to Deraa to Latakia. They're trying to move from one location to the other."

Bomb explodes near hotel used by UN monitors, Syrian state TV reports

From the villages to towns and now to the country?s largest two cities of Aleppo and Damascus, the fight for Syria has left no corner untouched. Rebels have managed to make in-roads into these areas, at times seizing control of them.

Opposition activists claim unverified footage shows the aftermath of a brutal massacre of Syrian rebels in Daraa. Meanwhile, pro-regime TV says forces were eradicating the city of terrorists. Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Cairo, Egypt.

Assad dismissed such setbacks, saying, "When the army enters a certain place, it means they are capable of taking it. They [the rebels] believed many of these neighborhoods were out of the government's influence. But the army easily entered most of these neighborhoods. The opposition could not control these neighborhoods.?

Assad saved his harshest criticism for those behind what he labeled as regional interference in his country, particularly one-time ally Turkey. "The Turkish position is well known. I hold the Turkish government accountable for all of the bloodshed in Syria,? he said.

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin answers your questions about Syria

In recent weeks, Turkey, France, opposition leaders and rebels inside Syria have floated the idea of a no-fly zone or a buffer zone over the northern part of the country to help shield civilians escaping the fighting.

But such a measure would require significant military commitments from foreign powers, something Assad dismissed, ?I believe that firstly, a no-fly zone is not going to work practically and secondly, the countries that are pressing for it, or the enemy countries, know that it is unrealistic to achieve."

Perhaps the one thing Assad and Syria?s opposition both agree on is that Syria?s war has become a battle of wills. And neither side has shown a willingness to back down anytime soon.

Reuters and NBC News' Alastair Jamieson contributed to this report.

Barclays appoints retail head as new CEO - seattlepi.com

LONDON (AP) ? Barclays PLC on Thursday named the head of its retail and business banking operations as its new chief executive, as shares in the crisis-hit group dropped following news of a new investigation into the bank's deals.

The bank announced that Antony Jenkins, 51, would fill the post vacated by the resignation of Bob Diamond in the wake of a scandal over attempts to manipulate a key interest rate index.

Jenkins takes over just as the bank has been hit by more bad news.

Barclays disclosed Wednesday that Britain's Serious Fraud Office was looking into payments the bank made to Qatar Holdings LLC when Barclays raised more than 5 billion pounds ($8 billion) of emergency capital at the height of the global financial crisis in 2008. The funds raised by Barclays in the Middle East saved it from joining other U.K. banks such as Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds in taking a government bailout.

Gary Greenwood, an analyst at Shore Capital, said the investigation "further highlights Barclays' somewhat murky past under the previous leadership and the need for the new management team to come in and clean up the company's culture, processes and image."

Barclays shares were down 1.5 percent at 183 pence in midday trading in London.

Barclays is also assumed to be a target of a Serious Fraud Office investigation of manipulation of the London interbank offered rate (LIBOR), a market index which sets the price of a wide range of financial instruments including mortgages.

So far, Barclays is the only bank which has been identified as submitting false reports of the rates it expected to pay to borrow from other banks, although other banks are known to be under investigation. Barclays was fined $453 million by U.S. and British agencies in June, and Diamond resigned on July 3.

"We have made serious mistakes in recent years and clearly failed to keep pace with our stakeholders' expectations," Jenkins said.

"We have an obligation to all of those stakeholders - customers, clients, shareholders, colleagues and broader society - and a unique opportunity to restore Barclays' reputation by making it the 'go to' bank in all of our chosen markets."

Barclays' retail division, Jenkins' old department, has not been immune to problems. The bank has set aside 1.3 billion pounds to compensate household and business loan customers who were sold payment protection insurance which they did not need.

Jenkins began his banking career with Barclays in 1983, then moved to Citigroup in 1989. He was appointed chief executive of Barclaycard in 2006, and head of retail business and banking in 2009.

As group chief executive, he will receive an annual salary of 1.1 million pounds and be eligible for bonuses up to four times that amount.

Edifier Prisma e3350BT 2.1 Bluetooth Audio System

As Bluetooth wireless audio streaming continues to increase its presence in portable speaker docks and headphones, it's now finding its way into less likely areas, such as speaker systems intended for computers. The Edifier Prisma e3350BT 2.1 Bluetooth Audio System, at $129.99 (direct) , is reasonably priced for a quality 2.1 PC speaker system?add in the Bluetooth streaming capabilities and it's a potential steal. However, while its overall sonic performance is balanced, with a subtle bass presence, a rattling subwoofer frame and some other odd design choices make that price seem more in line with its overall capabilities.

Design
The sleek 2.1 Prisma speaker system comes in white, silver, or, like our model, black, with the two matte plastic satellite speaker frames measuring 9.2 by 1.8 by 4.7 inches. On the front panels, cloth speaker grilles hide a 2.75-inch mid-range driver and a 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter on each speaker. The 30-watt subwoofer features a 5-inch, downward-firing driver. It features the same matte black plastic and vaguely-triangular theme, measuring 7.83 by 9.76 by 11.57 inches, with an under-lit Power button that mimics the status lighting of the under-lit Volume knob on the wired remote.

The sub is the heart of the system with the wired controller, the two satellite speakers, the power supply, and an optional wired 3.5mm input all connected to its rear panel. Unfortunately, all these cables can be a bit cumbersome, and some, like the cable that connects to both satellites, seem a bit short if you wish to keep the sub on the floor and out of sight. Having the power button on the floor-sitting subwoofer is also a bit annoying. Inline

The connected controller has a large metallic Volume dial, but no Power button or track navigation buttons. The Bass level control is hidden on the back of the sub?it's not adjustable from the remote itself. Despite having basically no purpose other than adjusting the volume, the control manages to redeem itself with the inclusion of an extra 3.5mm aux input and a headphone jack. It seems, however, that all of these things could easily have been placed on one of the satellite speakers without making the design hideous, thus eliminating the need for the wired controller altogether and making the entire system a bit more manageable. Edifier, however visually alluring its products may be, is no stranger to odd design choices?the recently reviewed Edifier Spinnaker ?has an annoying cable connection port that makes set up a little frustrating.

The Prisma is armed with Bluetooth version 2.1+EDR, and supports the A2DP codec. Pairing with a Bluetooth sound source is a quick and simple process, and like most Bluetooth systems, the range of the speakers is roughly 30 feet.

Performance
At top volumes, the Prisma 2.1 system has some trouble handling tracks with really deep bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout." The issue, however, is not really about distortion?the signal sounds mostly clean. The problem is the actual vibrations from the deep bass, which make the subwoofer's frame rattle and sound as?if?it were distorting heavily. This seems to only occur at top volumes, however, and only on tracks with serious low end (The Edifier Spinnaker also suffers from this issue.) At reasonable volumes, the Prisma conveys most tracks with a subtle low-end presence. It is neither over-the-top nor anemic, even when the bass level is maxed out on the sub.

This balanced approach benefits most musical genres. On classical tracks like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the speakers let the mid and high frequencies shine, with an emphasis on clarity. The sub's presence is subtle, even at maximum bass level, lending a bit of depth to the brass, large percussion, and lower register strings. The system's overall focus is skewed towards the mid and high range instruments, allowing for nice clarity and texture in the higher strings and wooden percussion hits.

Bill Callahan's vocals on his latest record,?Apocalypse, are delivered with a smooth low-end presence, paired with a crisp edge in the high-mids, while the kick drum has a nice, punchy presence. This has as much to do with the subwoofer's low-end boost as it does the satellites' pleasing mid-range clarity, resulting in a lively bass drum pedal attack followed by a pleasantly rounded-out resonance.

This same mid range clarity creates a ferocious sound when applied to the attack of the thumping beat on Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," which also benefits from the sub's presence, but again, in a subtle way. This is more of a flat response system that many 2.1 speaker systems tend to be?and it is certainly not a system for bass fiends.

For $130, the Prisma delivers a clean sound at moderate volumes, with just enough low-end to please. Its Bluetooth streaming is solid, and it's hard to discern much of a difference between the wireless stream and a wired signal from the same sound source, though sometimes the wired signal seems to provide a little more deep bass presence. The annoying design choices and rattling sub may keep the Prisma from greatness, but it's still a solid choice in this price range.

If you're not hooked on a wireless system, the $170 Harman Kardon SoundSticks III, an Editors' Choice, is another visually pleasing 2.1-channel speaker system that offers a bit more thump from the subwoofer and similar clarity in the high frequencies. If Bluetooth is your main priority, but you'd prefer a docking system that can charge your iPod or iPhone, as well, the JBL OnBeat Xtreme ?is another Editors' Choice, but it is significantly more expensive. Finally, if all of these suggestions are out of your range and you're looking for a more affordable PC speaker system, the Energy Power EM-2.1 ?is not wireless, but it's about as affordable as speakers get while maintaining any sense of musical quality.

Gain Control Over Your Screensavers With These Simple Steps ...

We all enjoy our favorite screensavers but in the same time we all hate to see that they sometimes disturb our movies, presentations and all the things we do and do not like to be disturbed from. Just read carefully this article and you will never have this problem again.

Screensavers will always prevent your monitor from burn-ins but their will be always moments when you want them to be disabled so they will not disturb you.

Sure, the best solution is to be able to disable your screensavers before any activity like the ones that I mentioned at the beginning of this article and because many other peoples did encountered this problem before us, many softwares have appeared to help us.

The one I found very simple to use because it doesn?t have many features but does the job very good is Galt Screen Control by Galt Technology. You can download this software from here: http://www.galttech.com/screenshots/screencontrol.html

It?s very simple to use. You just have to right click on it?s icon in the system tray and select your option.

You will not have to remember to enable your screensavers because you have the option to disable them for a selected time, which I found very useful.

Another option for you would be a more complex software created by South Bay Software, Hot Corners. You can download

it from here: http://www.southbaypc.com/HotCorners/

Even if it?s more complex, still it?s very easy to use. It will allow you to disable screensavers very quickly. You will be able to control your screensavers in three ways: by clicking the icon in the system tray, by moving the mouse into one of the screen corners and by pressing a combination of keys on your keyboard.

This software will let you decide what it should do if you place the mouse cursor in one of your monitor corners. You can setup it to turn screensavers off if you place your cursor in the left corner and turn them back on if you place it in the right corner. I found this option to be very useful and very easy to use.

In addition, you can set a pair of keyboard shortcuts to quickly disable or activate any screensaver, prevent screensavers from starting and in the same time it won?t let your monitor go in power saving and power-off modes. Aside this it has many other features that will make your life a lot more easier.

After reading this very simple steps you have now gained more control over your screensavers. Now, just go on and put them under control.

Chinese industrial profits fall in July

BEIJING (AP) ? Profits at China's industrial companies tumbled in July for a fourth straight month, a sign of enduring economic weakness that adds to pressure on Beijing to drive a sluggish recovery.

Total industrial profits declined 5.4 percent compared with a year earlier, accelerating from June's 1.3 percent fall, government data showed Monday. That might hurt investment, a key part of Beijing's recovery plan for China's deepest slump since the 2008 global crisis.

The decline follows July's collapse in export growth and weak consumer spending despite repeated stimulus measures. The slowdown has forced thousands of small companies to close, raising the threat of job losses and unrest as the Communist Party prepares to hand over power to younger leaders.

Lower profits might force the government to ease credit policy or step up spending to offset private sector weakness.

"This would suggest that policy easing is crucial to support the economy in the coming months," JP Morgan economists Haibin Zhu and Grace Ng said in a report.

Economic growth fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the second quarter. Analysts expect a rebound later this year but say it will be slow and too weak to drive global growth without improvement in the United States and debt-crippled Europe.

The profit figures showed a striking gap between the performance of state-owned companies, which receive government support and priority access to lending by government banks, and private sector companies that have struggled but are more flexible and efficient.

Profits for government-owned industrial enterprises fell 12.2 percent in the first seven months of the year compared with the same period last year, while private sector profits rose 15.5 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The figures cover companies in fields such as steel and chemical production, manufacturing of autos, electronics and machinery, oil and natural gas and power generation.

Beijing cut interest rates twice in June and is pumping money into the economy through higher spending on public works construction. But Communist leaders have resisted calls for more aggressive stimulus after huge spending in response to the 2008 crisis fueled inflation and a wasteful building boom.

Premier Wen Jiabao warned last month that the country's job situation will become "more complex and severe."

This weekend, Wen called for efforts to stabilize trade after July's export growth collapsed to 1 percent, well below forecasts, from the previous month's 11.3 percent expansion. He was visiting Guangdong province in the southeast, an export region that has been battered by weak foreign demand.

"The third quarter of the year is a critical period for China to realize the year's export growth target and we should take targeted steps to stabilize growth," Wen said, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

The report gave no indication of possible measures but Beijing previously has promised tax cuts and loans by state banks to help struggling exporters.

August manufacturing activity fell to a nine-month low, according to the preliminary version of HSBC Corp.'s monthly purchasing managers' index. It said new export orders fell at the fastest rate in three years.

The International Monetary Fund and private sector forecasters expect China's economy to grow by about 8 percent this year. That is robust compared with low single-digit growth expected in the United States and a contraction in Europe but painful for Chinese companies accustomed to a rapid expansion.

The government set a target of 10 percent trade growth this year. Trade grew by 9.2 percent over the first half but that fell to 7.8 percent for the first seven months of the year, making the annual target look increasingly hard to meet.

In the southeastern port of Wenzhou, an export center, a business association says 10 percent of its 3,000 member companies have closed and 20 percent are in trouble, the government newspaper China Daily reported Monday.

300-mile stretch of Gulf Coast on alert for Isaac

TODAY's Al Roker and Matt Lauer report from Key West, Fla., which is being hit by heavy winds and rain. Other parts of the state are experiencing similar conditions, including the site of the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Updated at 9:30 a.m. ET: MIAMI -- Tropical Storm Isaac swirled into the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, threatening to strengthen into a hurricane that could make landfall near Louisiana almost seven years to the day after Katrina struck.

It's "trying to form an eye-like feature" but it's "still a little bit shy of hurricane status," National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said in a morning update.

At 65 mph, Isaac was just a few miles short of hurricane status and that should happen within the next 24 hours, Knabb added.?

The governors of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi declared states of emergency as a hurricane warning went into effect for?a roughly 300-mile stretch of the Gulf Coast in four states from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.

"Tonight is when the conditions will start to go downhill" ahead of landfall Tuesday night, Knabb said.

The National Hurricane Center was no longer forecasting a Category 2 hurricane on landfall, but instead a weaker Category 1. Still, Isaac will probably move slowly inland, possibly dumping as much as 18 inches of rain in places, Knabb said.

"That's going to be the big problem," NBC meteorologist Al Roker said on TODAY. "We're talking about potentially 24 hours of hurricane force winds and heavy rain."

"Storm surge is going to be a big, big problem," he added. "Six to twelve feet above normal as you get to New Orleans. Panama City is about four to seven feet."

Follow Isaac's path with our storm tracker

The hurricane warning area runs from Morgan City, La., westward to Destin, Fla. It includes?New Orleans, which was devastated when Hurricane Katrina swept over the city on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage along the coast. A hurricane hasn't hit the Gulf Coast since Ike in 2008.

NBC's Lester Holt reports from New Orleans, La., where residents and visitors are prepping for Tropical Storm Isaac ?as it threatens to strengthen into a hurricane before landfall.

If Isaac makes landfall a bit west of New Orleans that puts the city in the northeast quadrant of the storm, Roker noted, "and that's the worst place" for storm impact.

With tropical storm force winds that extend 240 miles from its center, Isaac is an unusually wide storm.?

"Impacts will be far to the east and to the west of where it comes ashore," Craig Fugate, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told TODAY.

TODAY's Savannah Guthrie talks to Jefferson Parish president John Young about possible impact of Tropical Storm Isaac on Louisiana, how residents should prepare and when voluntary evacuations will become mandatory.

Reshuffled Republican convention to proceed on Tuesday

Robert Latham, the director of Mississippi's emergency management agency, urged residents to prepare for the storm's possible arrival.

"This is important to remember, this is a huge storm," he said. "I don't have to tell you what a storm like that can do."

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley ordered mandatory evacuations beginning on Monday for residents in low-lying areas along the coast.

Oil companies earlier evacuated workers and cut production at Gulf offshore rigs.

Weather.com reported that areas as far west as extreme southeast Texas should continue to monitor Isaac's progress in case a farther west track materializes.

Alan Diaz / AP

Tropical Storm Isaac rakes the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba as begins to bear down on Florida, where Tampa will be hosting the Republican National Convention.

Some Gulf residents started stocking up on supplies and securing their homes. In New Orleans, long lines formed at some gas stations and in Gulfport, Miss., people crowded supermarkets to buy bottled water and canned food.

On Sunday,?the storm lashed the?Florida Keys?and Miami area with wind and rain. Monday morning, some 80,000 south Florida homes and businesses were without electricity due to downed trees that fell on power lines.

Impact on gas prices?
Forecasters are predicting a more westward track that could bring Isaac over the heart of the U.S. offshore oil patch, which produces about 23 percent of U.S. oil output and 7 percent of its natural gas.

Once ashore, the storm could wreak havoc on low-lying fuel refineries along the Gulf Coast that account for about 40 percent of U.S. refining capacity.

Isaac's path ? whether west toward the Florida Panhandle or east toward New Orleans ? is disputed by European and U.S. weather forecasting models. The Weather Channel's Bryan Norcross has more.

That could send gasoline prices spiking just ahead of the Labor Day holiday, analysts told Reuters. "It's going right in the heart of refinery row," Phil Flynn, an analyst with Price Futures Group in Chicago, said Sunday.

From weather.com: Live updates and analysis

Isaac's westward track meant the worst of its weather missed Tampa, where the Republican National Convention was to open its four-day meeting on Monday -- but official events were delayed until Tuesday because of the storm.

Tampa and much of Florida's west coast and panhandle saw bands of heavy rain on Tuesday morning.

"There's an isolated tornado threat in central Florida up through the northeastern gulf area," Knabb said. "Just because the center is out in the gulf don't think that in Florida there aren't some hazards."

Several governors from Gulf states have altered their plans for the GOP convention. Alabama's Gov. Bentley has canceled his trip, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said he's likely to do so unless the threat from the storm subsides. Florida Gov. Rick Scott gave up a chance to speak.?

NBC's Chuck Todd reports from Tampa, Fla., where delays at the Republican National Convention due to Tropical Storm Isaac are set to disrupt the lead-up to Mitt Romney's acceptance of the Republican nomination for president.

In south Florida, winds from Isaac forced cancellations of hundreds of flights in and out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and other south Florida airports on Sunday.

Isaac moved into the Gulf of Mexico after spending several days sweeping across the Caribbean.

In Haiti, Isaac added to the misery of more than 350,000 survivors of the 2010 earthquake still living in flimsy resettlement camps as water gushed into tents and corrugated plastic shacks were ripped apart by the wind.

Isaac slams tent camps in Haiti

Authorities in the impoverished nation said the storm had killed eight people, including three children.

In the Dominican Republic, officials said three people were missing, and confirmed the death of the mayor of a town near Santo Domingo, who was swept away as he tried to save another person from a flooded river.

No deaths or injuries were reported in Cuba, which got off lightly when the storm crossed its eastern flank instead of raking up the length of the island as originally predicted.

Hi, Im 25 and planning to buy a - Auto Insurance Questions

Hi, Im 25 and planning to buy a used truck. Its a 2003 Lincoln Navigator. First I need my license. So I wanted to know if being a new driver would make insurance expensive. Also does it make more financial sense to make monthly payments or buy a whole yr or even 2 yrs? I live with my 5 yr old sistet. Shell be on the road with me a lot. How does that factor into my situation. Does that matter to insurance companies? Do you have a rough estimate of what I would be paying?

I cannot give you an estimate of what you should be paying, but I can tell you that being a new driver will increase your rates. On your side is the fact that your are 25 years old, an age at which insurance rates typically begin to decline. The most financially smart way to buy a policy is yearly. When you pay by month, there is usually an extra $5 fee or so added on for each payment. However, if you pay by direct deposit from your bank account, most companies will waive that fee, allowing you to pay monthly without penalty.

Driving a child around will not affect your rates at all. However, any other family members in your home who are licensed but don?t own cars of their own will affect your rates. Companies assume other household drivers are likely to borrow your car.

A Lincoln Navigator is a good, strong car that should hold up well in an accident. It?s often a family car, making it more appealing to insurance companies and therefore less expensive to insure. Your choice of car is good.

You can find out what it will cost to insure the car as soon as you have your driver?s license. You?ll need it when using the form on our site to get a quote. Congratulations and good luck!

Control of siRNA could aid regenerative medicine, cancer therapy

Some of the body's own genetic material, known as small interfering RNA (siRNA), can be packaged then unleashed as a precise and persistent technology to guide cell behavior, researchers at Case Western Reserve University report in the current issue of the journal, Acta Biomaterialia.

The research group, led by Eben Alsberg, associate professor in the departments of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopedic Surgery, have been pursuing experiments that seek to catalyze stem cells to grow into, for example, bone and cartilage cells, instead of fat, smooth muscle and other cell types.

Beyond tissue engineering, the scientists believe that their technology could be used to starve a tumor by blocking growth of blood vessels that carry nutrition to a malignancy. Or the siRNA could bring on cancer cell death by interfering with other cellular processes.

siRNA is a short section of double-stranded RNA that inhibits gene expression. The molecule can jam up the machinery that produces specific proteins important to cell processes.

A current challenge to using siRNA to block growth of cancerous tumors or guide cell behavior in tissue engineering, is that the tiny material rapidly disperses when injected in the bloodstream or directly into target tissues.

Alsberg, Khanh Nguyen, a postdoctoral researcher, and Phuong N Dang a doctoral student here, packaged siRNA in a mix of polymeric materials. Under ultraviolet light, the mix is induced to form hydrogels connected by a network of polymer threads.

As the threads of the hydrogels break down, the siRNA molecules are cut loose to redirect the fate of the targeted cells. Ultimately, this system can be injected into a target tissue and application of light from outside the body will induce hydrogel formation.

"Local delivery helps target the siRNA to specific cell populations of interest, such as cancer cells in a tumor or stem cells in a bone fracture," Alsberg said. "The ability to alter cell behavior with siRNA can depend on the length of exposure time to the genetic material.

"We can tune the material properties so we can control the dose and rate at which cells are exposed to siRNA. This capacity may prove to be therapeutically valuable."

Tests showed the siRNA effectively interfered with a signal pathway of cells surrounding and inside the hydrogels over an extended period of time.

By adjusting the formula, essentially adding more hands that hold onto the siRNA in the hydrogel complex, the team increased the amount to time target cells are exposed to siRNA from a few days up to a few weeks, thus prolonging the sabotage of undesired cell development.

Alsberg has been awarded a $346,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health and a $1.15 million grant from the Department of Defense to test how well specially packaged siRNA can grow bone and cartilage from stem cells. His lab has already begun these experiments.

Unity Spiritual Center Chooses Airband's Fixed-Wireless Network to ...

Airband?s hosted VoIP and high-speed Internet access keeps Unity?s community connected

DALLAS ? Aug. 27, 2012 ? Airband Communications, the largest fixed-wireless voice and data provider for businesses in the U.S., today announced that Unity Spiritual Center, in Sun City, Ariz., selected Airband?s hosted Voice over IP (VoIP) and high-speed Internet access to improve its technology capabilities and increase bandwidth.? Unity is using Airband?s fixed-wireless data services to stream weekly services and classes live, in high-definition to its fast-growing congregation and remote members located throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Unity?s leadership chose Airband for its ability to deliver scalable voice and data services as a single-provider solution.

?Airband offered the quality of technology we needed to reach our remote members effectively, and their Internet connectivity is four times faster than what the phone company can provide, which was the main factor in our decision-making process,? said the Rev. James Yeaw, minister at Unity Spiritual Center.? ?We spent a very challenging year with our previous Internet provider and had to make a change because traditional phone lines couldn?t give us the bandwidth to broadcast high-definition video, so we?re pleased to have found Airband.?

Unity has seen swift benefits since implementing Airband?s hosted voice and high-speed data services; for example, Unity recently installed a new alarm system that can be monitored and controlled through its VoIP system and via the Internet.

?With Airband, Unity has discovered that voice over IP opens the door to a lot of readily available and affordable services, and we are thrilled with both the quality of technology and customer service we?ve received from Airband,? Yeaw said.? ?Airband?s customer service has made our transition to fixed-wireless smooth and enjoyable for our leadership and our congregation.?

More than six months of services, classes and seminars are available from Unity online.? Because of the high-speed streaming capabilities made possible by Airband, Unity?s facility has attracted national organizations such as Edgar Cayce?s A.R.E. (Association for Research and Enlightenment), The Institute of Noetic Sciences? and others.

?Airband is proud to deliver enterprise-class voice and data services that do not follow a one-size-fits-all approach,? said Matt Clark, vice president of Airband?s western region.? ?As a leader in hosted VoIP and high-speed data services, Airband is pleased to provide Unity with a flexible solution that increases their technology capabilities, guarantees uptime and can help the ministry stay connected to its community in new ways.?

Airband serves 17 markets across the U.S. including Atlanta; Austin; Baltimore; Dallas; Des Moines; Fort Lauderdale; Fort Worth; Houston; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Miami; Orange County, Calif.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; San Antonio; San Diego and Washington, D.C.

dot coma ? Are Domain Names Even Relevant Now? | Small ...

Posted on 26. Aug, 2012 by Jay Baer in Blog, domain names, Small Business Internet Marketing, Small Business Marketing

badge jay says dot coma Are Domain Names Even Relevant Now? I have been in digital marketing a long time.

How long?

When I started, domain names were free, because why would anyone pay money for something of no consequence?

My first online voyage was in 1994, working with my college pals at Internet Direct, Arizona?s first Internet company (and also the inventor of virtual Web hosting, ultimately sold to Mindspring). Domain names were free, and brands didn?t even know what the World Wide Web was in many cases (given that graphical browsers barely existed). If you were a .org, you had to prove you were a non-profit. Domain names ending in .net were reserved for telcos and Internet providers (like us) exclusively. So, in this Wild West era, the Internet Direct guys registered several choice domain names before anyone even noticed.

Fast forward.

Anheuser-Busch: ?It seems you have the Budweiser.com domain name?? ?We?re thinking about putting together one of those Web Sites, so can we have the name??

Internet Direct: ?Sure, but it?ll cost you.?

Anheuser-Busch: ?How much??

Internet Direct: ?100 cases of Bud longnecks, delivered to our office.?

Fast forward.

Guinness: ?It seems you have the Guinness.com domain name?? ?We?re thinking about putting together one of those Web Sites, so can we have the name, lads??

Internet Direct: ?Sure, but it?ll cost you and we?re not selling as cheap as we sold to the Bud guys.?

Guinness: ?How much??

Internet Direct: ?Two trips to Ireland, and brewery tours.?

Fast forward.

The Good Times

It?s easy to forget in our modern, Twitterfied, post-9/11 world where The Situation can make $25,000 to show up at a party, but it was just six years between the first Netscape browser (Mosaic Netscape 0.9) and the dot com crash of 2000. Barely 2,000 days. The world changed an awful lot in six years, and while Internet usage then was nowhere near as pervasive and insidious as it is today, the seeds were certainly sown. Five years after the brewery tour ?swindle? of Guinness, my Internet Direct pal sold the beer.com domain name to Molson for several MILLION dollars. (I did not have a piece of that action, which is why I?m writing this blog instead of sunning myself in Barbados).

That was the apex of the domain name.?

Slip Sliding Away

Today, the beer.com domain name has been abandoned, and I wonder why we even bother to worry about whether ?good? domain names are available.

After all, how often do you really encounter domain names these days?

  • Twitter shortens and hides domain names (for your ?protection?).
  • In many cases, you willfully disguise the brand equity of your domain name by using bit.ly, tinyurl.com or the bada.ss shortener your cousin cobbled together for you.

20 Facebook 300x81 dot coma Are Domain Names Even Relevant Now?

  • Compared to domain name, Facebook gives headlines far more visual prominence.
  • QR codes are routinely used (mostly incorrectly) as a domain replacement.
  • Facebook has nearly one billion members. Your website does not. Thus, you may be tempted to show your Facebook URL at the end of your TV spot, or on your trucks, or in your email ? instead of your domain name.
  • Pinterest doesn?t even show domain names until you get to the detail page, and even then it?s at the bottom.
  • YouTube won?t let you add a link in a video to your website, only to another YouTube video ? another strike against the domain name.

jay baer s bottle opener business card Flickr Photo Sharing 291x300 dot coma Are Domain Names Even Relevant Now?

  • Business cards ? historically featuring prominent domain names ? are becoming the drive-in movie of networking, a quaint relic of yesteryear. (except mine)

Does your domain name even matter? You could probably change it to rumpelstiltskin.com right now, and it would be mid-week before anyone noticed. (alas, name already taken)

No wonder GoDaddy sold when they did. Got out while the getting was good, the way I see it.

And you?

Apple vs. Samsung: California jury awards Apple $1 billion

A jury decided Friday that Samsung stole Apple's iPhone and iPad technology. Judge has not yet ruled on whether Samsung must pull all of it's smartphones and tablets from the US market.

After a year of scorched-earth litigation, a jury decided Friday that Samsung ripped off the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad.

The jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple $1.05 billion. An appeal is expected.

Apple Inc. filed its patent infringement lawsuit in April 2011 and engaged legions of the country's highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion from its top smartphone competitor. Samsung Electronics Co. fired back with its own lawsuit seeking $399 million.

RECOMMENDED: 20 tips and tricks every iPhone user should know

The verdict, however, belonged to Apple, as the jury rejected all Samsung's claims against Apple. Jurors also decided against some of Apple's claims involving the two dozen Samsung devices at issue, declining to award the full $2.5 billion Apple demanded.

However, the jury found that several Samsung products illegally used such Apple creations as the "bounce-back" feature when a user scrolls to an end image, and the ability to zoom text with a tap of a finger.

As part of its lawsuit, Apple also demanded that Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market. A judge was expected to make that ruling at a later time.

After the verdicts were read, the judge sent the jury back to deliberate further on two inconsistencies involving about $2.5 million in damages awarded to Apple based on products jurors found didn't infringe Apple's patents. Those deliberations were continuing.

During closing arguments at the trial, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny claimed Samsung was having a "crisis of design" after the 2007 launch of the iPhone, and executives with the South Korean company were determined to illegally cash in on the success of the revolutionary device.

Samsung's lawyers countered that it was simply and legally giving consumers what they want: Smart phones with big screens. They said Samsung didn't violate any of Apple's patents and further alleged innovations claimed by Apple were actually created by other companies.

Samsung has emerged as one of Apple's biggest rivals and has overtaken Apple as the leading smartphone maker. Samsung's Galaxy line of phones run on Android, a mobile operating system that Google Inc. has given out for free to Samsung and other phone makers.

Samsung conceded that Apple makes great products but said it doesn't have a monopoly on the design of rectangle phones with rounded corners that it claimed it created.

Google entered the smartphone market while its then-CEO Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board, infuriating Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who considered Android to be a blatant rip off of the iPhone's innovations.

After shoving Schmidt off Apple's board, Jobs vowed that Apple would resort to "thermonuclear war" to destroy Android and its allies.

The trial came after each side filed a blizzard of legal motions and refused advisories by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to settle the dispute out of court. Deliberations by the jury of seven men and two women began Wednesday.

Dozens killed in explosion at Venezuela refinery

A Venezuelan oil refinery will be restarted within a few days after a blast Saturday killed at least 26 and injured 80 others. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By The Associated Press

Updated at 10:10 p.m. ET: A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire on Saturday, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 80 others in one of the deadliest disasters ever to hit the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, among the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

The explosion shattered walls of nearby shops, ripped out windows from homes and left the surrounding streets covered with rubble and twisted scraps of metal.

President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning and ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. "This affects all of us," Chavez said by phone on state television. "It's very sad, very painful."

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said on state television late Saturday that at least 39 people were killed by the explosion, up from the earlier death toll of 26. He said that the dead included 18 National Guard troops and that six of the bodies had not yet been identified. Other officials said earlier that the dead included a 10-year-old boy.

In a neighborhood next to the refinery, shopkeeper Yolimar Romero said she was at her computer when a shock wave swept over the area shortly after 1 a.m.

"At that instant, the whole house shook as if it were an earthquake," she said. "The windows went flying off with their frames and everything."

Electricity was knocked out, leaving Romero in the dark and her house filled with smoke. She found a flashlight and started looking for her husband and three children.

Outside on the street, the family saw scattered hunks of brick walls and ruins of a National Guard post and about 20 other homes. Bodies were being pulled from buildings down the street.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released.

Officials said firefighters had largely controlled the fire at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where flames were still visible on Saturday night after billowing dark smoke all day.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a natural gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said.

Images shortly after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky, and injured survivors on a stretcher and in a wheelchair. The bloodied bodies of victims were loaded onto pickup trucks.

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to determine the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor was appointed to lead the investigation and troops were deployed to the area.

While the cause of the disaster remains unclear, some oil workers and critics of Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company.

"We warned that something was going to happen, a catastrophic event," said Ivan Freites, secretary general of a 1,200-member union of oil and natural gas industry workers in Falcon state where the refinery is located. He spoke in a telephone interview from an area near the refinery, where he could see the flames raging in the distance.

Daniela Primera / AP

An explosion at a Venezuelan oil refinery triggered the fire seen at right early Saturday.

The refinery complex's general manager, Jesus Luongo, denied that a lack of maintenance was to blame, saying in the past three years more than $6 billion has been invested in maintaining the country's refineries.

Ramirez said the explosion hit an area of storage tanks, damaging nine tanks.

"All of the events happened very quickly," Ramirez said. "When we got here in the middle of the night, at 3 or 3:30 in the morning, the fire was at its peak."

The oil minister said that supplies of fuel had been cut off to part of the refinery and that firefighters were using foam to extinguish the flames in one of the remaining tanks.

"This regrettable and sad event is controlled, is under control," Ramirez said on television, while plumes of smoke continued to billow.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the U.S. and a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Ramirez said the state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA should be able to "restart operations in a maximum of two days."

"We want to tell the country that we have sufficient inventories of fuel. We have 10 days of inventory of fuel," Ramirez said. He said the country's other refineries were operating at full capacity and would be able to "deal with any situation in our domestic market."

An official of the state oil company, known as PDVSA, said the country also has enough supplies on hand to guarantee its international supply commitments. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

In terms of international oil markets, the disaster is not likely to cause much of a ripple, said Jason Schenker, an energy analyst and president of Austin, Texas-based Prestige Economics LLC. Noting that other refinery accidents and shutdowns regularly occur around the world, he said: "There's likely to be relatively limited impact on global crude or product pricing."

"The real tragedy," he said, "is that these events continue to happen, not just in Venezuela but everywhere. It is a dangerous business."

Gustavo Coronel, an energy consultant and former PDVSA executive, called the tragedy "probably the worst one the oil industry has had in many years."

"Accidents happen, of course, although the problem with PDVSA is the inordinate amount of accidents that have taken place during the last years," Coronel said. Considering the overall record, "we are not talking about bad luck but about lack of maintenance and inept management," he said.

The labor leader Freites, who has worked at the refinery for 29 years, said workers had repeatedly alerted state oil company officials to problems that they feared could lead to an accident. "We've been complaining about problems and risks, including fires, broken pipes and a lack of spare parts," Freites said.

One opposition group comprised of former PDVSA employees, Gente del Petroleo, or Oil People, said it could not yet pass judgment on the cause of the explosion. But it but noted there had been ample concerns about lack of maintenance and poor management.

The group said in a statement that since 2003, 79 other serious accidents have been reported at the Paraguana Refinery Complex, collectively killing a total of 19 workers and injuring 67 others.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who is challenging Chavez in the country's Oct. 7 presidential election, expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

"We Venezuelans are one, and we grow in the face of this type of situations," Capriles said.
