UPS takes 100 EVs on the road in California, makes delivering packages eco-friendlier

UPS takes 100 EVs on the road in California, makes delivering packages ecofriendlier

The Golden State's without a doubt at the forefront of the so-called green movement, and thus it shouldn't come as a surprise that UPS chose it as the destination for 100 of its brand-new electric trucks. This initiative is a natural expansion of UPS' eco-friendly scheme, as the delivery behemoth has already implemented something similar in New York City and Europe, with nearly 30 roadsters currently being operated around those areas. It's also worth noting that's only a small chunk of the more than 2,500 "alternative fuel vehicles" on the company's roster, which includes more electrics, hybrids and others with natural gas technologies. In California, meanwhile, the 100 delivery EVs mark the culmination of a plan that started back in 2011, and will see UPS take these (and all of their 75-miles-on-a-single-charge goods) to a few West Coast cities, such as Bakersfield, Fresno, Sacramento and San Bernardino. Folks in the area, be on the lookout, since you may very well spot one the next time your expected package reaches its "On Vehicle for Delivery" status.

Stella! Ornery dog leads to $1M Idaho lottery win

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? A group of blue collar University of Utah workers will split $1 million in lottery winnings thanks to a set of keys left in a truck and an ornery little dog named "Stella."

Thirteen years after playing the same set of numbers every month in the Idaho lottery, the group of 33 workers who work on heating and cooling university buildings hit pay dirt when Steve Hughes left his truck running to keep his dog "Stella" warm while he went inside to a gas station near Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, on Jan. 6. Utah has no lottery.

When he returned to his truck, his miniature pincher had locked him out by putting her paw on the manual lock. Hughes, 29, planned to buy the ticket elsewhere, but instead he had his girlfriend buy it there while he tried to pick the lock with a slim jim.

He eventually coached Stella to put her paws on the electronic window button in the back seat, allowing Hughes to get in the car.

What seemed like an annoying delay that day turned out to be serendipitous when the group discovered Wednesday night that they had won second prize in the Idaho Powerball. They announced the great news during a morning meeting Thursday morning at the HVAC shop at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Hughes thought it was a joke ? looking for the camera filming the prank.

"It was pretty exciting," said Richard Tison, 50, the supervisor.

About 25 members of the group made the 5.5-hour trip on a charter bus to Boise, Idaho on Friday to turn in their winning ticket and collect their checks. The rest had to stay behind to make sure the university's buildings were toasty on the cold winter day, Tison said.

It was a raucous ride on the bus, with the crew making it a "party bus" type atmosphere as they celebrated their good fortune. After collecting their money, the group planned to climb back on board the bus for the journey home ? though some suggested they might stop off at a watering hole in Boise to contemplate their winnings.

Tison and Hughes say they will each get about $20,000 after taxes, or as Hughes said, "A nice little bonus during the year."

Hughes plans to save half of his share and buy a four-wheeler. Many in the group plan to buy four-wheelers or drag cars, he said. Some are going to save or invest it.

"I'm going to pay off some bills and probably get me a boat," Tison said.

Hughes' dog, "Stella," didn't get to go on Friday's "party bus" but the lucky winners had previously made sure she was rewarded.

"She got a couple of big surprises when I got home," Hughes said. "She got 18-inch rawhide bones."

The group began buying the tickets in February 2001 with just three people. The pool grew to 33 people, but the philosophy of using the same numbers never changed.

Recently, some in the group suggested they change the numbers ? fed up with 13 years of futility. But Tison, one of the original three, insisted they stay the course. Hughes estimates that they've each put in $200 to $400 over the years, depending on how long they've been in the group.

Tison said they plan to keep playing the Idaho Powerball, taking turns making the monthly 1.5 hour drive to Millad, Idaho to pick up a ticket.

And yes, Tison says they'll keep playing the same numbers: 11-16-33-40-41.

"There is no need to change them," Tison said. "It worked once, why wouldn't it work again."

Beat By Dre: The Exclusive Inside Story of How Monster Lost the World

There's never been anything like Beats By Dre. The bulky rainbow headphones are a gaudy staple of malls, planes, clubs, and sidewalks everywhere: as mammoth, beloved, and expensive as their namesake. But Dr. Dre didn't just hatch the flashy lineup from his freight train chest: The venture began as an unlikely partnership between a record-industry powerhouse and a boutique audio company best known for making expensive HDMI cables. Felix Hernandez, Mariners Close To Contract That Would Make Him Highest-Paid Pitcher: REPORT

SEATTLE -- Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners are working on a $175 million, seven-year contract that would make him the highest-paid pitcher in baseball, according to a person with knowledge of the deal's details.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the agreement has not been completed. USA Today first reported the deal.

Seattle would add $134.5 million of guaranteed money over five years to the contract of the 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner, whose current agreement calls for him to receive $40.5 million over the next two seasons.

Hernandez's total dollars would top CC Sabathia's original $161 million, seven-year contract with the New York Yankees and his $25 million average would surpass Zack Greinke's $24.5 million under his new contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hernandez's new money would average $26.9 million over five years, which would tie him for the second-highest average in baseball with Josh Hamilton and Ryan Howard behind Alex Rodriguez ($27.5 million).

Hernandez agreed to a $78 million, five-year contract in January 2010 and has earned an additional $2.5 million in escalators and $300,000 in bonuses. He is due $20 million this year and $20.5 million in 2014, which would be superseded by the new deal.

Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said he could not comment when reached on Thursday, and Hernandez's representatives didn't immediately return messages.

If the deal is finalized, it would leave Detroit's Justin Verlander and the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw as the most attractive pitchers eligible for free agency after the 2014 season. Tampa Bay's David Price is eligible after the 2015 season.

Hernandez has become the face of Seattle's struggling franchise, transforming from a curly haired 19-year-old who wore his hat crooked to one of the most dominant and exciting pitchers in baseball. Known as "King Felix," he became the first Seattle pitcher to throw a perfect game in a 1-0 win over Tampa Bay last August.

His fiery enthusiasm on the mound and his willingness to first sign a long-term deal in 2010 have endeared him to fans in the Pacific Northwest who have gone more than a decade without seeing postseason baseball.

Hernandez is 98-76 with a 3.22 ERA in eight seasons with the Mariners. He won a career-high 19 games in 2009 when he finished second in the Cy Young voting then won the award a year later when he went just 13-12 but had a 2.27 ERA and 232 strikeouts.

His career record would be even better if he didn't play with one of baseball's worst offenses. Seattle had the lowest batting average in the major leagues in each of the last three seasons; Hernandez lost 21 times during that span when giving up two earned runs or fewer.

Hernandez appeared to be making another Cy Young push last year before going 0-4 in his last six starts, which left him at 13-9 with 223 strikeouts.

Essential Residential Demolition Equipment - Dumpster Rentals NJ

Last updated 10 hours ago

Do you have an old pool that never gets used and is spoiling your backyard landscaping? Maybe you want to tear down your aging garage to make way for a home addition you?ve been dreaming of. No matter what home improvement project you have in mind, the proper demolition equipment is essential to your success. Whether you have construction experience and will be tackling this project yourself with rented equipment or you have hired a renovation specialist to help you with the task, there are a handful of items you will need to effectively and efficiently get the job done.

Power and Hand Tools

Breaking down concrete and aggregate building materials obviously requires more than a little elbow grease. For most building demolition projects, you will need to rent or buy a concrete pulverizer. Hydraulic-powered saws, drills, crowbars, and other equipment may also be helpful, depending on the nature of your project. Necessary tools that you probably have on hand include a grapple, hammer, wheelbarrow, pickaxe, and shovel.

Pickup Truck

If you are a contractor carrying out a demolition project on a client?s property, you need a pickup truck or large van to haul your equipment around. DIY enthusiasts may also find this type of vehicle useful, especially if they are renting equipment.

Rental Dumpster

Renting a dumpster will help you keep your project site clean and safe. A rental dumpster can also help you get the job done faster. Most sizes have several times the storage capacity of trucks and vans, and the company you rent from is likely to deliver and pick up the dumpster for you, transporting your load to the landfill or recycling center on your behalf.

No matter the scope of your demolition project, you will benefit from renting a dumpster. To speak with an experienced dumpster rental company that specializes in both residential and commercial services in New Jersey, visit RentDumpsters.com or call (201) 258-3699!

Poll: Have Behavioral Finance Precepts Improved Your Investment ...

In a poll conducted earlier this week in the CFA Institute Financial NewsBrief, we asked readers whether implementing behavioral finance principles in their investment practice has meaningfully improved results.

Has implementation of behavioral finance precepts into your investment practice meaningfully improved your results?

Poll: Has implementation of behavioral finance precepts into your investment practice meaningfully improved your results?

Among the three possible answers given, 48.25% of respondents indicated that they have not implemented behavioral finance at their investment firms. Although this may seem surprising, a consistent criticism of behavioral finance is its lack of a unifying theory. In other words, although behavioral finance observations of cognitive biases are descriptive, they do not necessarily suggest how to take advantage of these biases or how to avoid them.

That said, a majority of respondents (51.75%) stated that they have incorporated behavioral finance tenets at their investment firms. Among this group, 44% reported success in implementation, whereas 7.75% stated that they have not achieved success.

Perhaps recent works by Greg B. Davies and Arnaud de Servigny (Behavioral Investment Management) and Daniel Kahneman (Thinking, Fast and Slow) will not only increase implementation of behavioral finance but also improve results. Also, CFA Institute is hosting a forum, Behavioral Finance: From Theory to Practice, that may aid interested practitioners.
