Barclays looking far afield in hunt for bosses

LONDON (Reuters) - The likelihood of intense political and regulatory scrutiny on the new chairman and chief executive of Barclays means both must be untainted by its reputational collapse and are likely to be recruited externally, possibly from Canada or Australia.

The bank has told investors it is looking to have either one external and one internal appointment, or two external appointments, a top 10 shareholder in the bank said.

Another industry source said shareholders want both to be external.

That has left former J.P.Morgan banker Bill Winters as favorite to be CEO and former UK Cabinet Secretary Gus O'Donnell as the front-runner for chairman, according to industry sources and UK media reports.

But an outsider could come up on the rails, such as Mike Pedersen, a former Barclays banker who now heads wealth management for Canada's TD Bank.

Canadian banks have emerged from the financial crisis far better than rivals in the United States and Europe, thanks to their more conservative strategy and risk appetite.

Pedersen, based in Toronto and a past chairman of the Canadian Bankers Association, is head of TD Bank's wealth management and insurance businesses, as well as its IT, real estate and project management.

He joined from Barclays in July 2007, where he ran the private bank and two other international units, after being poached in 2002 from Canada's CIBC.

Pedersen was on vacation and not immediately available for comment. Barclays and the two headhunting firms conducting the searches declined to comment.

"GUARANTEED HOSTILITY"

The new chairman and CEO face stiff challenges.

Barclays was fined $450 million four weeks ago for manipulating Libor interest rates in a scandal which unearthed deep problems in its relations with regulators, who have accused the bank of frequently being too aggressive.

Both jobs look set to face increased scrutiny -- and possibly interference -- from UK authorities. After years of excess, the pay packets on offer are likely to shrink.

"The problem is what has unfolded with Stephen Hester," said one headhunting industry source, referring to political interference in the running of majority state-owned Royal Bank of Scotland, where Hester is CEO.

"They could have to go outside the UK. Who here would want it...there is guaranteed political, media and public hostility."

Bob Diamond quit as Barclays CEO on July 3, a week after the Libor scandal blew, and left immediately. Chairman Marcus Agius has said he will leave when a successor is found.

Barclays on Tuesday picked veteran lawyer Anthony Salz to lead a root-and-branch review of its culture and practices, admitting it "needs to evolve".

The bank is expected to pick its chairman first and is under pressure from the Financial Services Authority and the Bank of England to pick people for both positions in the next three months.

A long list of candidates is being drawn up.

O'Donnell, asked if he had been approached, told BBC radio on Tuesday: "I can safely say nobody has contacted me either from headhunters or from Barclays board about that."

The economist, who was cabinet secretary between 2005 and 2011 and was the UK's representative at the IMF and World Bank, would bring strong connections with government. But he has also been tipped as a candidate to become governor of the Bank of England next year, so may not want the Barclays job.

Winters may not either.

He is a former co-head of J.P.Morgan's investment bank, seen as a key attribute given that investment banking provides more than half of Barclays' profits.

The bank is reviewing all parts of its investment bank, people familiar with the matter said, and the scale of any retreat will be a key issue for the new CEO. [ID:nL2E8INBAT]

Winters, who left the U.S. bank in 2010, was a critic of industry excesses and risk-taking and was part of a UK commission that said banks must separate their UK retail banking arms to shield taxpayers, potentially giving him political and regulatory backing.

Headhunter Spencer Stuart is helping Agius in the search for the CEO and Ana Mann's MWM is helping John Sunderland, a Barclays non-executive director, run the chairman search.

Other CEO candidates could include RBS's Hester; Standard Chartered Finance Director Richard Meddings; and Naguib Kheraj, a former Barclays finance director and current advisor.

Antony Jenkins, head of its retail business, is seen as a strong candidate. But he lacks investment banking experience, so one option could be to make him a co-CEO, potentially with sole control in two or three years.

Mike Smith, CEO of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group was seen as a candidate, but said last week he wanted to see through ANZ's push to become a super-regional bank.

Gary Hoffman, who previously ran Barclaycard and nationalized UK lender Northern Rock, is favorite at bookmakers Ladbrokes and Paddy Power to land the CEO job at odds of 2/1, although few in the industry expect that to happen.

Michael Rake, deputy chairman of Barclays, ruled himself out of contention to be chairman after some shareholders said they wanted an outsider who could implement a far-reaching overhaul.

Possible candidates for the chair include Mervyn Davies, who was CEO and then chairman of Standard Chartered from 2001 until 2009 and a government minister until May 2010; David Roberts, who ran Barclays' international banking and is deputy chairman at Lloyds; Glen Moreno, a former Citigroup banker who stepped down as a director of Lloyds this year; former financial services minister Paul Myners; or UK businessman Roger Carr. Droid X360 PS Vita clone goes for the KIRF prize, antagonizes Microsoft, Motorola and Sony at the same time

Can we establish a KIRF award for Most Likely to Invite Multiple Lawsuits? If so, Long Xun Software would have to claim the statuette for its Droid X360, at least if it dared set foot in the US. This prime example of keepin' it real fake is even more of a PS Vita clone than the Yinlips YDPG18, but goes the extra mile with a name that's likely to irk Microsoft, Motorola, Verizon and George Lucas all at once. That's even discounting the preloaded emulators for just about every pre-1999 Nintendo, Sega and Sony console. Inside, you'll at least find a device that's reasonably up to snuff: the 5-inch handheld is running Android 4.0 on a 1.5GHz single-core Quanzhi A10 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of built-in space, a 2-megapixel camera at the back and a VGA shooter at the front. If the almost gleeful amount of copyright and trademark violation isn't keeping you from wanting this award-winner, you'll have to ask Long Xun for pricing and availability.

3 Tips for Meeting Older Guys on Online Dating Sites

Lots of people find love across the age divide and settle down with a person several decades older or younger and although society often frowns upon relationships between older women and younger men, it is very common for younger women to find older guys more attractive. So if you have a penchant for silver foxes, check out my 3 tips for meeting older guys on online dating sites.

Why are women attracted to older guys anyway?

For a younger woman, the attraction of an older guy is usually self-evident: an older man comes with the benefit of age, experience, and financial security. He is likely to be blessed with a high degree of emotional maturity and thanks to a well established career, have a home, car, and plenty of spending money (with which he is more than happy to indulge his younger lover). But unless you are prepared to start dating your parents' friends and associates, it can be difficult to meet interesting and attractive older guys.

Are online dating sites a good place to meet older guys?

The beauty of online dating is that it allows you to narrow the field of potential suitors without leaving the comfort of your armchair and instead of enduring many pointless evenings with people who don't even come close to fulfilling the criteria of your "must have" list, you can target the right kind of men from the beginning.

3 tips for meeting older guys on online dating sites

1. If you have a particular type of older guy in mind, find the niche dating site to suit your requirements. There are hundreds of different dating sites out there these days, all of which are designed to help you meet Mr Right. These include dating sites for people with specific interests and hobbies as well as Sugar Daddy dating sites for girls hoping to make a mutually beneficial arrangement with a rich older guy.

2. Be very specific in your profile and make sure you select the right age group when deciding who is allowed to contact you. Lots of people forget to tick the boxes and wonder why men of all ages and types are messaging them-so instead of wasting your time and theirs, state upfront that you prefer older men.

3. Older men are always going to be more attracted to younger women who look good, but do not be afraid to show off your intellect and sparkling conversational skills. Looks matter, but a relationship won't last the course unless there is a mental spark, too.

I've met a great older man-what next?

Once you have found a sexy older man on an online dating site, spend some time getting to know him and do not be tempted to rush things. You should also be aware that it might be awkward in the beginning, particularly when your family and friends find out you are dating a man a lot older than you, so be prepared to be subjected to an awful lot of criticism.

However, the perks of dating an older guy more than make up for any hassle you might have. Older men can make you feel like a pampered princess and if you are a penniless student or young woman at the start of your career, being whisked away on romantic mini breaks and spa weekends is highly enjoyable and much more fun than dating a guy your own age!

Harper heals, helps Nats split pair with Braves

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:09 p.m. ET July 21, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - On the verge of a major stumble, Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals proved resilient.

After Friday's 11-inning demoralizing defeat, the Nationals promptly lost the opener of Saturday's doubleheader and the prized rookie to an injured ankle. Without the Harper in the starting lineup for the nightcap, Washington fell behind by two runs in the first inning.

But the 19-year-old returned to single and score as a pinch-hitter, Roger Bernadina had a tiebreaking hit in the seventh inning and Washington earned a split of the day-night doubleheader with a 5-2 victory over Atlanta on Saturday night.

The Braves won the first game 4-0 behind Ben Sheets' strong performance.

Instead of another loss and barely maintaining its division lead, John Lannan helped Washington snap a three-game losing streak and move ahead of Atlanta in the NL East by 2 1/2 games.

"I think most of the guys in this locker room felt like it was a must win tonight," said closer Tyler Clippard, who pitched the ninth inning for his 16th save. "If they took three from us right away, it would have been a pretty big blow. To get this win tonight, John stepped up in a huge way for us, pitched great and our offense came through when we needed, too. It was a huge win."

In between games, Nationals manager Davey Johnson said the MRI on Harper showed no break though he kept his centerfielder out of the starting lineup for Game 2.

Harper entered in the eighth and singled, stole second and scored on Danny Espinosa's single to right. The first-time All-Star stayed in as the right fielder in the ninth.

"It feels all right," Harper said. "Once I get going, that's when it feels good. When I sit down, that's when it feels bad."

Bernadina, who entered as a defensive replacement after Harper fouled a bunt off his left ankle in the first inning of the first game, finished 5 of 7 on the day including a go-ahead RBI single in the night game.

Lannan (1-0) pitched seven innings for the win.

Cristhian Martinez (4-2) allowed a run in 1 1-3 innings of relief behind starter Randall Delgado.

In the opener, Sheets (2-0) pitched six shutout innings, Brian McCann and Chipper Jones homered. Outdueling Nationals starter Edwin Jackson (5-6), Sheets extended his scoreless innings streak to 12 in his return after missing last season because of Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Harper gave signs that he would play in the second game when he stepped into the on-deck circle in the seventh.

After Sandy Leon's leadoff single and with the scored tied at two, Johnson instead turned to pinch-hitter Mark DeRosa, whose sacrifice bunt advanced Leon to second. One out later, Bernadina's grounder into right field scored Leon.

Harper's failed bunt attempt came in the bottom of the day's first inning. Limping and doubled over in pain for several moments, he completed the at-bat by striking out. Harper returned to center field in the second inning, but Bernadina replaced him on defense for the top of the third with the Nationals trailing 1-0.

"(Bryce) was down hitting, trying to swing with it, and Michael Morse and (Adam))LaRoche saw him and said he can't even swing. So, that's why I took him out," Johnson said.

The kid thought he could tough it out.

"I didn't think I broke something," Harper said. "Pain doesn't really get to me much. I think if he would have left me in there I could have played, definitely."

Riding the momentum of the earlier win - their third straight - the Braves jumped ahead 2-0 in the first. Jones stroked a two-out, RBI double into the right-center gap of Lannan and Freddie Freeman followed with an RBI hit.

Jones hit a two-run, pinch-hit home run in the first game.

Recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, Lannan settled down and held the Braves scoreless over the next six innings, not allowing a hit over his final four innings. Despite a 4.89 ERA in the minors, the Nationals' leader with 10 wins last season allowed only five hits, walked two, struck out three and hit two batters before the sellout crowd of 40,007.

Including Friday's loss, the Nationals failed to score for 15 innings before scratching across a run in the fifth and six innings against Delgado. Trailing 2-0, Espinosa raced home from third with two outs in the fifth on a wild pitch.

Washington loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth on two singles and a hit batter. Ian Desmond's RBI groundout tied it at 2.

Also brought up from the minors to pitch game two, Delgado allowed two runs and six hits over six innings.

In his second start of the season and with light rain falling intermittently, Sheets threw 91 pitches, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Jackson struck out nine to match his season high while allowing five hits and two walks over seven innings. His one mistake was McCann's solo homer in the second inning, the 16th of the season for the Braves catcher and his seventh in 10 games.

NOTES: With three RBIs, Jones has 1,601 for his career. ... Nationals OF Jayson Werth (wrist) finished 1 of 3 with a walk in his first rehab assignment at single-A Potomac. .Braves starter Jair Jurrjens faces Ross Detwiler in Sunday's series finale.
