House of Grace: 8 Tips for a Simple, Fun Holiday Season

Let it all hang out this holiday season! ?Good Enough IS the New Perfect? Is the mere thought of the upcoming holidays making you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, guilty and quite frankly stressed the hell out? Does the idea of escaping it all and landing in a remote island appeal to you??

In a world jammed with cutesy DIY projects, photos of gift wrap themes and scrumptious recipes that are posted all over the internet it?s no wonder our holiday To?

Do lists have gotten out of control! Professional organizers, Grace Brooke and Jennifer Ford Berry are known for their tough love approach to simplifying, organizing and being more productive in less amount of time.? Here is an inside peak at some of their favorite tips for keeping it real and maintain your sanity during the holidays: 1.??? Get real about your expectations. Turn off the HGTV channel and hide your Martha Stewart subscription until January. Design your own holiday experience without the pressures of the media. 2.??? Quit being a grouch and start being grateful.? Stop complaining about what still needs to be done and start being grateful for all of your blessings and accomplishments.? 3.??? Develop a holiday vision that is unique to your family. Sit down as a family to discuss the things you want to do during the holidays and more importantly the things you don?t want to do.? You may include: movies you want to see, old traditions, new traditions, places to visit etc. Write up a list and post it where your family can be reminded of it daily. 4.??? Stop cluttering up your friends? and family?s homes! Give them the gift of an experience, a memory that they will enjoy and cherish forever. It can be anything from gift certificates to memberships to services for your home. 5.??? Opt out of the ?Perfect-Holiday-Card? contest. Do you notice how everyone is trying to come up with the designer holiday card (you know?the one that is professionally shot, where the family is in coordinating outfits, the hair is perfect and everyone is full of holiday cheer).? A snap shot from last summer?s vacation is good enough! (The NEW perfect). 6.??? Stop being Martha Stewart and start getting drunk with the rest of them!

This holiday season pass on the sit down dinner and plan a fun, simple cocktail party with appetizers.? Make it more about getting together and less about weeks of?

preparation.? Good food and good company is what it?s all about. 7.??? Let the ?Fifty Shade of Gift Wrap? go and just get it done. Keep it simple.? For example: recycling your kids? artwork to add a personal touch to your gift wrapping. (And this is a great way to get rid of more crap). 8.??? Cut down on your holiday storage and decorate your tree with natural ornaments. Make clean up and storage a snap by using popcorn, berries, cookies, pine cones, bird nests, oranges, candy and other disposable items.

Utah Republican activist facing rape charges found dead after jail release

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - A Utah Tea Party activist and Republican fundraiser charged with more than two dozen felony counts of rape and sexual assault has died from an apparent suicide just four days after he was freed from jail on bail, his attorney said on Wednesday.

Greg N. Peterson, 37, was found dead in his remote Heber City-area cabin, in the mountains about 50 miles east of Salt Lake City, by two bail bondsmen late on Tuesday, defense lawyer Cara Tangaro said.

An initial investigation indicates Peterson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Wasatch County Sheriff Todd Bonner said at a news conference Tuesday night. The death remained under investigation.

The cabin was the site of Peterson's annual Rocky Mountain Conservative BBQ - an annual summer fundraiser initiated in 2010 for Republican Party luminaries, including presidential nominee Mitt Romney, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch and the state's governor, Gary Herbert.

Peterson was arrested in July and charged by Salt Lake County prosecutors with 25 counts sexual abuse, assault, rape, sodomy and kidnapping. The charges stem from allegations that Peterson had attacked four women he met through an online dating site for Mormons or at church-related events.

Wasatch County prosecutors filed a similar sex abuse case against Peterson in August after a fifth woman came forward.

Peterson, a financial planner, had denied the allegations, although he had not yet entered a plea in either case. On Friday, Peterson had posted bail of $2 million and was released from jail.

The bail bondsmen went looking for Peterson on Tuesday after something went awry with the signal from his ankle monitor and no one was able to reach him by phone, Tangaro said.

"We were worried that something was wrong," Tangaro told Reuters on Wednesday. "We had been having contact with Greg daily since his release."

Peterson had no known medical history that put him at risk for suicide and had not displayed any signs that he was in distress, Tangaro said. Peterson had felt, however, tremendous pressure from media coverage of the case, which he believed had unfairly demonized him, she said.

"I think the thought that he may not overcome that image, no matter the outcome of his case, was very difficult," Tangaro said. "We were absolutely shocked by (his death)."

Tangaro said she does not believe Peterson's apparent suicide should be interpreted as an admission of guilt.

Iconic actor Warwick Davis on his crossover role as app avatar

Despite WiFi connectivity issues and a Skype credit drought, I had the great pleasure of talking with the ever-pleasant Warwick Davis.

For the uninitiated, Davis is a British actor who played memorable characters in the Harry Potter films, Star Wars, Willow, and stars in the tremendously successful HBO series Life?s Too Short. Warwick?s collaborative involvement with creator Matmi and producer Offficial in the development of PocketWarwick, a Tamagotchi-style simulation game, is the impetus for this interview.

What makes this game stand out from others? In it you get to take care of a digital version of Warwick. You assist him in finding acting gigs, dress him in costumes, winning awards, and buy luxurious items as he lands more roles.

Here is what Davis has to say about the game, his favorite apps to drink to, and his love of all things Apple.

APPOLICIOUS: Provide a little background about PocketWarwick?s origins. What led you to develop your own app?

WARWICK DAVIS: I?ve had a smartphone for a number of years now, and I?m a big fan of gadgets in general. I think I own every model of Mac Apple has ever made. I don?t seem to get rid of them and look after them meticulously.

These days, we live with our phones all the time. In my acting career, I find that developing my own projects is very fulfilling. I was interested in creating a game about the world of acting, while balancing life with work and the money coming in. That was kind of the birth of PocketWarwick.

APPO: How hands-on are/were you in the app development process?

WD: Very. I was able to push the folks at Matmi and Offficial, but they were working simultaneously. Originally I wanted a two-dimensional animated game. However, the developers wanted a two-dimensional face on a three-dimensional body. I learned that developing a game is very different than a movie... when you release a game it doesn?t have to be the end. You can add updates and features. I'll continue to give input on the range of outfits that can be purchased using the in-game currency system. Since the game exists in parallel with my real life, versions of costumes from upcoming roles of mine will show up in future updates.

In terms of what I wanted for the game, I knew the experience couldn?t be shallow. I personally wrote over 350 parody film titles and synopsis that exist inside the game. When the agent offers auditions, you can have a laugh. Some of them sound so interesting that I might end up making them! I can access the database of titles and have been thinking about Twitter competitions where fans make up their own funny titles that we can add to the game.

What amazes me about the process is the length of time it takes. Fifteen people work on the game full-time. I watch them work and think about how people moan about the price of games. 40 pounds for a PlayStation game or whatever, they don?t really know the effort that goes into this process.

APPO: What features were most important to you in PocketWarwick?s gameplay mechanics?

WD: I wanted the game to play on two levels. First, the game needed to be one that you can pick up and play. I was inspired by apps that simulate drinking a beer so you can have a laugh at the pub, but also wanted PocketWarwick to be more in-depth like a simulation game. It?s entirely possible to play the game all the way through from Z-list to A-list without spending any real money, but in-app purchases are there if you want to speed things up.

I wanted the whole game to be free, but have the options to buy coins and speed up the process. My friend's four-year-old was playing the game for an hour and a half, dressing little Warwick up and doing basic domestic tasks like showering. My son enjoys leveling up digital Warwick?s XP and improving his celebrity status. I wanted the game to appeal to a broad range of gamers, including casual folks.

APPO: How did you incorporate your current HBO show Life?s Too Short and your previous film roles into the game?

WD: Definitely Life?s Too Short?s sense of humor, in showing the funny side of being a little person in this world. My personality is in the game, including scenarios I find humorous. For example, when PocketWarwick discovers his autobiography, he says ?Oh, this is a short story.? We can?t use exact film titles and characters due to copyright, but there are costume elements in the game that are close enough.

APPO: The game is very similar to old-school electronic games like Tamagotchi. What are some of the advantages in adopting this game format?

WD: I didn?t sit down to make this game in a formulaic way. We ended up realizing that in the end, there weren?t simple ingredients to make a game like that. I didn?t look at it as an advantage. If people like looking after something or somebody, it would appeal to them. The developers and I stumbled upon the current incarnation of PocketWarwick.

We had a physics professor working on the game to help with character movement. I think a free experience is important. You can choose how you want to play the game. If you do well as an actor, you can buy the big screen TV one day.

APPO: How does it feel knowing that very soon thousands of people will be able to interact with your game-based avatar on a daily basis?

WD: I hope it is thousands! It will be a weird thing. Usually people recognize me from movies and television, but now maybe people will say ?I was just playing your game!?

I?ve been testing it over the last months, and it?s interesting how you play the game and switch it off. You can say ?Let?s check how he?s doing.? Digital Warwick keeps living in there, and you don?t want him to get too hungry or deteriorate.

The right reaction to PocketWarick might be ?this is the weirdest thing I?ve ever seen!? It?s quite surreal and I am excited to see people?s reactions to it. I love Apple and what they do, so it?s nice to have a close association with that, having an app launched in The App Store.

APPO: Are you at all worried that players will become so obsessed with making PocketWarwick?s career work that they?ll forget about their own?

WD: Play it sensibly! I wouldn't want anyone to lose their job, but that would be the biggest compliment if someone was that into the game! If someone says they lost their job, I would be both sad and quite excited.

APPO: What are your favorite mobile games, other than PocketWarwick?

WD: Reckless Racing and Reckless Getaway. I love games with intricate, detailed graphics. Pick up and play games especially. I used to play SpinBall 2 on the Amiga. It was my favorite game, and the newer version has the same classic sounds as the original.

It?s no secret that I am not a brilliant gamer. On the other hand, my daughter is a completionist when it comes to games. She needs to get three stars on every level of Angry Birds. When I played Angry Birds and Flight Control I got to the point where my brain almost blew a few fuses.

APPO: If your first foray into mobile is a success, do you see yourself developing more games and starting your own mobile gaming empire? What other types of games featuring...yourself...would you want to see in the App Stores?

WD: I have other ideas for games. For PocketWarwick, we took 70 photographs of my face and recorded a lot of audio. I would like to use performance capture in a game, just as I have in movies. My kids motivate me to continue developing games, because they love playing them. We?ll see where it goes.

APPO: In the Harry Potter universe, Professor Filius Flitwick is the Charms Master, which is like being an app developer ? does he use an iPhone or Android device and why?

WD: Definitely iPhone. I think Apple would describe them as being magical.

Here is a trailer for PocketWarwick:

Ootent growth factor for blood stem cells identified

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Duke Medicine researchers studying the interaction of blood stem cells and the niche where they reside have identified a protein that may be a long-sought growth factor for blood stem cells.

The protein is called pleiotrophin, and is produced by cells that line the blood vessels in bone marrow. In mouse studies conducted by the Duke researchers, the protein helps transplanted blood stem cells locate to the bone marrow, where they produce mature red and white blood cells in the body.

The finding, reported in the Oct. 18, 2012, issue of the journal Cell Reports, could lead to new treatments that speed recovery of healthy blood levels for patients receiving chemotherapy or undergoing bone marrow and cord blood transplants.

"Our hypothesis is that pleitrophin has the potential to promote blood stem cell growth in the manner that erythropoietin stimulates red blood cell precursors," said principal investigator John Chute, M.D., professor of Medicine, Pharmacology & Cancer Biology.

Many patients have benefitted from the discovery of erythropoietin (EPO), which stimulates the body to produce mature red blood cells. A synthetic form of EPO is commonly used to treat patients with anemia. Similarly, granulocyte colony stimulating factor (Neupogen), a growth factor for white blood cells, is used to remedy low white blood cell counts that often result from chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer.

"A principle objective in hematology for several decades is to identify a growth factor capable of promoting blood stem cells to grow without differentiating," Chute said.

Pleiotrophin may be one such growth factor. Pleiotrophin, which means "many forms," appears to make blood stem cells grow and promote production of all the mature blood lineages that are derived from the blood stem cell. Previously, Chute and his colleagues had shown that treatment with pleiotrophin promoted the expansion of mouse and human blood stems cells in cultures that were capable of engrafting in transplanted mice.

In the new research, lead researcher Heather Himburg, Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine, and Chute's research team showed that cells lining blood vessels in the bone marrow produce pleiotrophin, where it acts as a homing device to attract and retain stem cells. The researchers then demonstrated that genetically engineered mice missing the gene encoding pleiotrophin had decreased numbers of stem cells in their bone marrow, and had difficulty making new blood cells if depleted.

When the researchers treated normal mice with an anti-pleiotrophin antibody, it had the surprising effect of causing existing blood stem cells to be released from bone marrow and enter the blood stream. The finding was particularly exciting to the researchers, as the effect was similar to that observed when granulocyte-colony stimulating factor is used clinically to mobilize stem cells from a donor's bone marrow for use in blood stem cell transplants.

"The discoveries together suggest two possible therapeutic uses," said Chute. "Treatment with pleiotrophin may prove useful in helping patients more quickly regenerate their own blood forming cells after chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant. Second, anti-pleiotrophin antibodies may be useful in mobilizing stem cells to the peripheral blood."

The researchers are planning additional studies to understand how the homing system works and how pleiotrophin interacts with other growth factors to regulate blood stem cell function in the body. Given that some prior studies have suggested that pleiotrophin can promote cancer cell growth, human safety studies will be crucial, Chute said.

Rajat Gupta Could Go to Prison for 10 Years for Insider Trading

146292441 Rajat Gupta faces sentencing Wednesday for his securities fraud conviction.

On Wednesday Rajat Gupta will appear in Manhattan federal court to be sentenced for passing secrets he learned, while serving on the board of directors of Goldman Sachs, to Raj Rajaratnam, the former chief of hedge fund giant Galleon Group. Rajaratnam himself was convicted in May 2011 of being the center of the biggest insider trading ring in decades. He?s serving 11 years for his crimes, one of the longest sentences ever for insider trading.

Like Rajaratnam, Gupta, the former head of McKinsey & Company, deserves punishment. He was convicted of a type of securities fraud, and fraud is a form of theft. He wrongly used his position of power and influence for personal advancement, corroding Main Street?s trust and confidence in Wall Street.?

Still, Gupta is no Rajaratnam. Gupta tipped inside information about one company to Rajaratnam, while Rajaratnam traded on confidential information collected from many sources. So you?d expect that Gupta would be treated differently when he appears for sentencing. Federal sentencing guidelines, however, suggest a prison term for him that?s similar in length to the 11 years Rajaratnam is serving. And prosecutors want a sentence within those guidelines, just as they want for the hundreds of defendants sentenced in federal courts nationwide every day. Because what Gupta and Rajaratnam did is so different, though, sentencing Gupta to anything like the time Rajaratnam is serving undermines the whole purpose of the sentencing scheme that prosecutors say they want to uphold.

Lawmakers enacted the federal guidelines in 1987 to try to ensure that defendants who?d committed like crimes received like sentences. They replaced the discretion that judges traditionally enjoyed with a rigid system of mathematical calculations for determining prison term length. Those guidelines were the law of the land until the Supreme Court?s 2005 decision in United States v. Booker, which untethered judges from strict application of the guidelines and returned to them many of the powers that had been wiped away 18 years earlier. Today, the guidelines are advisory, not mandatory.

Nevertheless, the Department of Justice still believes that the guidelines should be faithfully followed and that judges are wrong to deviate from them. In a 2010 speech to the American Bar Association, Lanny Breuer, assistant attorney general for the DoJ?s Criminal Division, cautioned that the department is ?especially concerned about increased disparity in white-collar sentencing.??In November 2011 Breuer reiterated to another audience that among the ?serious challenges? facing federal sentencing and corrections policy is increased ?disparities in federal sentencing? in recent years. In 2012, the DoJ?s annual report to the United States Sentencing Commission, the independent agency that develops and implements the guidelines, expressed concern about ?continuing erosion of the guidelines,? and said that ?serious reform? of federal sentencing law and policy ?is necessary.?

Strict application of the guidelines, though, precludes consideration of a whole host of factors relevant to fixing just and appropriate prison terms, like offenders? differing personal histories and their distinctive characteristics. That?s especially unfortunate when it means that the person at the top of a scheme and someone at the bottom end up being sentenced in the same way. Rajaratnam and Gupta provide a perfect example. They both were convicted of insider trading. But while Rajaratnam?s business was trading on inside information, Gupta didn?t buy or sell a single share of stock. Likewise, Rajaratnam made millions, while Gupta didn?t make any money. And Rajaratnam was caught on tape scheming with his co-conspirators. No such recordings of Gupta exist. Still, the former McKinsey chief faces up to 10 years in prison, almost as much time as the former Galleon head is serving.

Gupta and Rajaratnam are like the kingpin and corner street dealer who do roughly the same amount of time for drug dealing, as happens to a disturbing degree in narcotics cases (which accounted for almost 30 percent ?of the 80,000-plus cases resolved in federal court in 2011). Because drug sentences are fixed by drug type and quantity, not role, defendants in distribution rings face the same potential penalty, whatever their actual position and conduct.? That?s what happened to Jamel Dossie, a small-time, street-level drug dealer?s assistant who was an addict.? In New York in March, he received a five-year mandatory minimum sentence for his role as a go-between in four hand-to-hand crack sales for a total gain to himself of $140.

Luckily for Rajat Gupta, his sentencing judge is Jed S. Rakoff, who has said that where the federal guidelines ?provide reasonable guidance,? they ?are of considerable help to any judge in fashioning a sentence that is fair, just and reasonable,? but also argued that when the guidelines ?have run so amok that they are patently absurd on their face,? courts should rely more on general sentencing principles. Judge Rakoff faced this dilemma in the case of Richard Adelson, who was convicted of participating in a conspiracy to overstate the financial results of Impath Inc. (a laboratory services company) and artificially inflate its stock price. The guidelines recommended life imprisonment for him, even though other people had concocted and operated the scheme for years before Adelson joined it. Judge Rakoff gave him 42 months, describing the life sentence recommended by the guidelines as ?patently unreasonable.?

It?s because of Judge Rakoff that Gupta is widely expected to receive a sentence considerably less than what federal guidelines recommend, no matter what the government?s lawyers say. (Gupta?s own counsel have asked for probation.) But the approach of this judge is the exception. The reality of federal sentencing means that it should be closer to the rule.

    Astronomers study 2-million-light-year 'extragalactic afterburner'

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Blasting over two million lights years from the centre of a distant galaxy is a supersonic jet of material that looks strikingly similar to the afterburner flow of a fighter jet, except in this case the jet engine is a supermassive black hole and the jet material is moving at nearly the speed of light.

Research published over the weekend in the Astrophysical Journal Letters shows the galaxy-scale jet to have bright and dark regions, similar to the phenomenon in an afterburner exhaust called 'shock diamonds.'

A new image of the previously studied jet reveals regularly spaced areas that are brighter than the rest of the jet in a pattern that echoes the way the afterburner from a jet engine has brighter diamond-shaped areas in its general glow.

"One intriguing possibility is that the pattern we see in this cosmic jet is produced in the same way as the pattern in the exhaust from fighter jet engines," said Dr Leith Godfrey, from the Curtin University node of The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research.

Dr Godfrey said the jets are produced when material falls onto a supermassive black hole at the centre of a galaxy, but many details beyond that remain unknown.

"Massive jets like this one have been studied for decades, since the beginning of radio astronomy, but we still don't understand exactly how they are produced or what they're made of," he said.

"If the brighter patches are caused by the same process in astronomical jets as they are in earthly jet engines, then the distance between them can give us important information about the power of the jet and the density of the surrounding space."

Dr Godfrey said that jets like the one he studied are the largest objects in the Universe, about 100 times larger than the Milky Way.

"If we want to understand how galaxies form and grow, we need to understand these jets. They are extremely powerful and are believed to stop stars forming in their parent galaxy, limiting how big the galaxies can grow and effecting how the Universe looks today," he said.

"This new image of the jet shows detail we've never seen before and the pattern we revealed provides a clue to how jets like this one work," said Dr Jim Lovell, a co-author from the University of Tasmania.

"This particular jet emits a lot of X-rays, which is hard to explain with our current models. Our new find is a step forward in understanding how these giant objects emit so much X-Ray radiation, and indirectly, will help us understand how the jet came to be."

Dr Lovell said that the image had been taken using the CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array radio telescope in New South Wales.

Energy-sensing switch discovery could have broad implications for Biology & Medicine

Energy-sensing switch discovery could have broad implications for Biology & Medicine

    Monday, October 22, 2012

Biochemists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have discovered a genetic sequence that can alter its host gene's activity in response to cellular energy levels. The scientists have found this particular energy-sensing switch in bacterial genes, which could make it a target for a powerful new class of antibiotics. If similar energy-sensing switches are also identified for human genes, they may be useful for treating metabolism-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

"This discovery adds a new dimension to our understanding of how cells sense and manage their energy levels, which is one of the most important processes in biology," said the study's senior author, Martha J. Fedor, a professor the departments of Chemical Physiology and Molecular Biology and a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

The findings are described online ahead of print on October 21, 2012, in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

    A Fuel Sensor

This type of gene-switching sequence is known as a riboswitch because it appears on the strand of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that is first transcribed from a gene's DNA. Unlike other known riboswitches, which have relatively limited functions, this one acts as a sensor for the basic molecular fuel that powers all living cells and controls many genes.

The newly discovered riboswitch detects a small molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the standard unit of chemical energy in all known organisms on our planet. Scientists had thought that cells use only large and relatively complex proteins to sense these all-important energy molecules and adjust cell activities accordingly. No one had found ATP sensors among riboswitches, which can alter cell activity at a more fundamental level?usually by interrupting a gene's transcription from DNA.

Moreover, previously described riboswitches are relatively simple feedback sensors that affect narrow metabolic pathways. Most of them merely sense and adjust the expression rate of their own host gene. "This is the first riboswitch that is known to be involved in global metabolic regulation," said Fedor.

In recent years, the Fedor team had found hints that such a riboswitch could exist. Many RNA sequences with possible riboswitch activity had never been characterized, and several riboswitches in bacteria sense molecules that are closely related to ATP. Fedor and a graduate student in her laboratory, Peter Y. Watson, therefore set out to find bacterial riboswitches that could indeed sense ATP.

    Caught in the Act

The task was more challenging than it might have seemed. Watson could not simply expose suspected riboswitches to ATP and see which ones stuck best to the energy molecules. ATP is present in high concentrations in cells, and its interactions with its known protein sensors are necessarily fleeting, low-affinity affairs. Interactions with a riboswitch would be expected to look the same. "Such interactions are really too weak to be detected using traditional methods," Watson said. But he found evidence that an RNA interaction with an ATP-like molecule would occur in a way that allows the brief coupling to be caught in the act?using a burst of ultraviolet radiation, which can create a strong chemical crosslink between two molecules.

In this way, he discovered a stretch of apparent ATP-binding RNA known as the ydaO motif. Watson performed structure-mapping analyses of ydaO to confirm that it binds to ATP and to determine precisely where it binds. Attaching ydaO to a "reporter" gene, he found that in bacterial cells, the reporter gene's expression level stayed low when ATP levels were normal and rose sharply when ATP levels dropped?as would be expected if ydaO is really an ATP-sensing riboswitch. Even in unaltered cells of a test bacterium, B. subtilis, levels of the genes that normally contain the ydaO motif rose and fell in the same way in response to changing ATP levels.

The ydaO motif occurs in the large subset of bacteria known as gram-positive bacteria. Across these bacterial species, it has been found, to date, on 580 separate genes. "These ydaO-regulated genes encode proteins that have a wide variety of functions, from cell wall metabolism to amino acid transport," Watson said. "It makes sense that a riboswitch in control of such disparate processes would be responding to a central metabolite such as ATP."

    New Possibilities

The finding has basic scientific importance because it is the first known example of a riboswitch that binds ATP; it is also the first known riboswitch that has such broad regulatory functions. "It opens up the possibility that RNA switches are involved in the general regulation of metabolism," said Fedor.

The fact that ydaO motifs serve as "off-switches" for key bacterial genes also makes them a potential target for new antibiotics. "Hitting these riboswitches with a small-molecule, ATP-mimicking drug so that they can't turn on genes that promote bacterial growth and survival could be a viable approach," said Fedor.

Her laboratory will now search for other ATP-sensing riboswitches in bacteria and in higher organisms, including humans. A human ATP-sensing riboswitch, if targeted appropriately by drugs, might be able to alter cell activity in ways that help treat common metabolic disorders. Type 2 diabetes, which presently affects several hundred million people worldwide, is known to feature the improper regulation of ATP levels in cells.

Funding for the study, "The ydaO motif is an ATP-sensing riboswitch in Bacillus subtilis," was provided by the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel - The SPD Blogger Network

Today is a day I wasn?t sure would come. My son was diagnosed at age 4 with Sensory Defensive Disorder. ALL 8 senses were affected.? He received 20 OT visits as per insurance, then my husband?s position was eliminated :( Thankfully a family member stepped in and helped us pay for private OT as our school district was not helpful. We have gone through 2 more years of therapy and the Boy turned 7 this past summer, and is in 1st grade. There have been days I wasn?t sure we were even in the right tunnel, I had not even thought about finding the end of it!

Today I got to look at The Boy?s annual re-evaluation scores. This year he moved up to a harder test due to his age. Last year he still used the Early Childhood test, and still scored 2-3 1/2 years behind his chronological age in motor skills (both fine and gross). This year he did 4 tests. Two for gross motor; two for fine motor. On one of the gross motor tests he scored AT HIS AGE!!! And the other one only 6 months behind. On the fine motor tests he scored 6 months behind on one and 1 year behind on the other. His OT and I were not too concerned about that as when you look at the scores from each test-he is in the ?average range?. Did you read that? HE IS AVERAGE! :)

INSERT HAPPY DANCE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fists pumping, happy tears, twirling?and all of that!

Okay I am back. And his OT said that we are about to be done with OT. Not tomorrow, but soon. I am thinking less than a year soon?.I am hoping like in 6 months soon. Not because I hate OT-much to the contrary, I will bawl like a little kid who has lost her ice cream to a dirty sidewalk on his last day. No, I am happy because it will make a world of difference to not write a $200 check twice a month, but also because, IT WORKED! My guy is a fully functioning member of his general ed classroom. His writing is as good as most of the boys in his class, better even. Not bragging my kid is better-just that for something he has struggled with for so long he is there. He has made it!

I see it in his work this year. I see it in his confidence this year. This is an awesome feeling!

Now, he still has SPD. He WILL ALWAYS have SPD. It?s likely that around adolescence we will need to visit an OT again. This is a neurological disorder and when the brain goes through major shifts it throws things back off ?balance?. He?s gonna be my picky eater, and he may never color perfectly in the lines or be a star baseball player, (though neither would his mommy or daddy). Interoception still continues to be a struggle we face. However, he fits right in the middle with the rest of the kids :) And THAT makes me happiest of all :D

Funeral for slain Lebanon official ends in clashes

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanese security forces unleashed a barrage of gunfire and tear gas in central Beirut on Sunday to disperse hundreds of protesters trying to storm the government headquarters after the funeral of a top Lebanese intelligence official killed by a car bomb.

The speedy ignition of the protests demonstrated the flammability of the country's divisive and sectarian politics. The protesters blamed the assassination on the government of neighboring Syria and consider Lebanon's current government to be too close to that embattled regime.

Many also chanted against Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group that dominates the government and serves as the Damascus regime's closest Lebanese ally.

As the battle raged, with protesters and security personnel pelting each other with hunks of concrete, metal bars and tear gas canisters, former Prime Minister Fuad Saniora appealed for calm.

"The use of violence is unacceptable and does not represent the image that we want," Saniora said in a televised address.

Even before Friday's bombing, the civil war in Syria had set off violence in Lebanon and deepened tensions between supporters and opponents of President Bashar Assad's regime. The assassination has laid bare how vulnerable Lebanon is to renewed strife, threatening to shatter a fragile political balance struck after decades of civil strife ? much of it linked to Syria.

Sunday's clashes erupted after the funeral for Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, who was killed along with his body guard by a Beirut car bomb on Friday. Al-Hassan, 47, was a powerful opponent of Syria in Lebanon.

He was buried in Martyrs Square in downtown Beirut near former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, another anti-Syrian politician who was assassinated by a truck bomb in 2005.

Syria denied any role in Hariri's killing, but outrage in Lebanon expressed in massive street protests forced Damascus to withdraw its tens of thousands of troops from the country and end nearly 30 years of military and political domination of its smaller neighbor.

The scene at Sunday's funeral was faintly reminiscent of the huge, anti-Syria gatherings in 2005. But the crowd was far smaller than after Hariri's death.

More than 1,000 people walked about a quarter mile from the funeral site toward the stately, hilltop government headquarters. Only a few hundred clashed with the guards, tearing down metal barricades and hitting the guards with the sticks from their flags and placards.

The guards withdrew behind a tall barricade of concertina wire, which the protesters broke through, putting them within 50 meters (yards) of government headquarters. A few guards fired shots and one plainclothes officer pulled a pistol from his belt and fired over the protesters' heads. Then a roar of automatic gunfire erupted, sending the protesters scattering for cover.

It was unclear whether the guards fired in the air or shot blanks, but no protesters appeared to be injured.

In a telephone call with Lebanon's Future TV, former Prime Minister Saad Hariri urged the protesters to stop their attack.

"We are peace supporters and against violence," he said.

The security forces appeared woefully unprepared and their numbers were smaller than those usually deployed for much less contentious rallies.

After about an hour of clashes, more guards arrived, along with scores of helmet-clad commandos. They stood shoulder to shoulder across the road and blocked the protesters from advancing further.

Unrest broke out elsewhere in Lebanon, too. Protesters blocked major roads in Beirut and in the north with rows of burning tires and briefly closed the country's main highway to the south, the national news agency said.

Clashes also broke out in the northern city of Tripoli, with residents of two neighborhoods that support opposite sides in Syria's civil war exchanging gunfire.

Security officials have said six others were killed in the car bomb on Friday, and scores were wounded. But Lebanon's National News Agency said on Sunday that the final toll death toll was three: al-Hassan, his guard and a civilian woman.

The discrepancy could not be explained, though security officials said the other five victims were counted based body parts found at the blast site.

Al-Hassan headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, a Lebanese politician who was one of Syria's most loyal allies in Lebanon.

"He was killed while he was defending his country," said Samer al-Hirri, who traveled from northern Lebanon to attend the funeral.

France's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said it was likely that Assad's government had a hand in the assassination.

"Everything suggests that it's an extension of the Syrian tragedy," he told Europe-1 radio.

Sunday's protests quickly overshadowed the stately funeral for al-Hassan and his bodyguard.

Before the funeral, giant posters of al-Hassan were set up around Beirut calling him a "martyr of sovereignty and independence."

Thousands of mourners packed central Martyrs Square as soldiers carried in two flag-draped coffins.

"We came for Lebanon's future to show that we will not be scared," said mourner Rama Fakhouri, an interior designer. Many chanted that al-Hassan was a "martyr" who was struck down while trying to protect Lebanon.

TV footage showed al-Hassan's wife Anna, his young sons Majd and Mazen, and his parents, shedding tears near his coffin.

But the mood quickly changed. At one point, a Sunni cleric, Osama Rifai, gave a fiery speech, telling the crowd not to "be like women" and "take out their swords." Lebanese journalist Nadim Qutaish also called on mourners to "storm the government headquarters."

Both men's comments were carried live on TV and crowds of protesters approached the government headquarters soon after.

Al-Hassan's killing has set off a new round of political wrangling in Lebanon.

Before the clashes, Saniora called on Prime Minister Najib Mikati to resign, calling his Cabinet the "government of assassination."

"Staying in your post means that you approve of what happened," he said, adding that al-Hassan's killers "had domestic help."

Many of Lebanon's Sunnis see Mikati's government as too close to Syria and the Assad regime, which is dominated by the Alawites ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

A member of Mikati's Cabinet, Ahmad Karami, told the LBC TV station that the prime minister "is not clinging to the post but will not resign under pressure because of the chaos in the country."

Some Lebanese see al-Hassan's killing and Sunday's violence as an extension of Syria's civil war into Lebanon. While Lebanon's Sunnis have largely backed the uprising, many others, especially Shiite Hezbollah, have stood by Assad.

For the protesters, the connection was clear.

"The Syrian regime started a war against us and we will fight this battle until the end," said protester Anthony Labaki, a 24-year-old physiotherapist.

For years after Syria's 2005 pullout from Lebanon, there was a string of attacks on anti-Syrian figures in the country with impunity. Assad managed to maintain his influence in Lebanon in the years afterward through Hezbollah and other allies.

Samaha, the former minister arrested in al-Hassan's investigation, remains in custody. He is accused of plotting a wave of attacks in Lebanon at Syria's behest.

Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's most senior aides, was indicted in absentia in the August sweep that saw Samaha arrested. Samaha's arrest was an embarrassing blow to Syria, which has long acted with impunity in Lebanon.

(AP) ? One day out from their last debate, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are cramming foreign policy and taking a rare break from swing-state campaigning.

Monday's face-off in Boca Raton, Fla., represents one of the last major opportunities for Obama and Romney to capture the attention of millions of voters ? especially that small but sought-after group of voters who haven't yet made up their minds.

Obama was holed up in Camp David in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he arrived Friday to prep for the debate, a 90-minute encounter focused on international affairs. With him at the presidential retreat were a band of top advisers including National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, campaign strategist David Axelrod and White House senior adviser David Plouffe.

Romney planned to spend the weekend in Florida, continuing intensive preparation that has consumed large amounts of his time in recent weeks.

Foreign policy has surfaced as a prominent issue in the waning weeks of the race, elevated by a deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and a restive situation in Syria. Although polls show voters continue to prioritize economic issues, both candidates are aggressively pitching themselves as more competent to be commander in chief.

In an unusually quiet day on the campaign trail, Romney running mate Paul Ryan was the only candidate to be out in front of voters. The Wisconsin congressman plans two events Sunday in Iowa, including one in Sioux City with country singer Mark Wills, plus an evening rally in Colorado.

Still, with a tight race closing in, neither Romney nor Obama can afford more than a few days away from the handful of states that will decide the winner.

Obama planned a whirlwind excursion starting after Monday's debate. Events Tuesday in Florida and Ohio will be followed by around-the-clock campaigning Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Then on to Tampa, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; and Cleveland on Thursday, when Obama will also return home to Chicago to vote early as part of the campaign's push for early and absentee voting.

In a sign that the candidates' time has become the most precious commodity, Obama's aides said he planned to sleep Wednesday night aboard Air Force One and would call undecided voters from the airplane between stops.
