Despite earning high marks from former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney?s GOP presidential rivals,?particularly former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton?gave Romney his endorsement for the presidency on Wednesday night.
Speaking to Greta Van Susteren on the Fox News Channel, Bolton made the announcement and explained his reasoning.
Bolton also quipped that there was only one ?ideal? candidate ? which happened to be him.
In lieu of his own candidacy, however, he said ?I?m going to support Mitt Romney.
?I?ve thought about this very hard. This is extraordinarily important decision for the Republican Party. I believe it?s absolutely critical to defeat Barack Obama in November. I think our country would be in dire straits domestically and internationally if he gets another four years. And I think Gov. Romney is the person who can best lead the party, best articulate our conservative principles and is most likely to beat Barack Obama.?
?Faced with everybody else, I followed the William F. Buckley Jr. test, which is to find the most conservative candidate who is capable of getting elected,? he said. ?There are obviously two variables there. But in the words of the old song ?Give me that old time religion,? Romney is conservative enough for me and I think he?s the one most likely to get elected, and I think that?s critical.?
In December?Romney told?Hugh Hewitt?s radio audience that he was impressed with Bolton?s proposals to reform the State Department.
